The City Health Office of Cadiz in Negros Occidental marked National Dental Health Month with activities on the theme “Ngiting Matatamis Ngiping Malinis, Dala ay Saya Tunay na Ligaya”, to raise awareness on the importance of oral dental health, Dr. Jeffry Guanzon, city dentist, said.

Target groups were children aged one to five years old; adolescents and youth age 10 to 24; pregnant women; and those 60 years old and above, Guanzon said in a press release.

Instead of the usual tooth extractions, the celebration focused on health promotion through oral health education, counseling and supervised tooth-brushing drills, he said.

Outreach activities were also held in Purok Santan, a depressed area in Cadiz, where supplemental feeding, health promotion, tips on proper diet and correct oral hygiene practices, and the unhealthy effects of tobacco, and mouth piercing on adolescents, were emphasized, he added.

Toothbrushes, toothpastes and bars of bath soap, were distributed and a demonstration on the correct tooth-brushing technique and a tooth-brushing drill for children and adolescents were held, he said.

Two children from Barangay Burgos – Mary Heartfel Villegas and Charmel Jasmin – who were considered by the City Health as orally-fit, were awarded with certificates and health products.

A lecture-presentation on oral health care for older persons was participated in by members of the Cadiz City Senior Citizens Association from barangays Zone 1 to Zone 4 and a health education presentation was held for post-partum and lactating women at the Cadiz Emergency Clinic Obstetrics Ward, the press release added.*
