‘Brainsbee’ winners named

Five students in the town and city championship rounds of the 3rd “Brainsbee ni Albee sa District Three” emerged as winners in the community-based academic competition, a press release from organizers said.

Trixie Yulatic, 11 years old and a grade 5 pupil of the St. Scholastica’s Academy, and Camille Joy Guarin, 16, who recently graduated from the Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School, bested other representatives from the 16 barangays of Silay City, in the elementary and high school category in the contest held May 14.

Kiella Mae Banguaga, 12, and a grade 6 pupil of Minoyan Elementary School; and Jian Frynz Demonteverde, 15, graduate of Negros Occidental National Science High School, meanwhile, won over other bets who represented the 23 barangays of Murcia last May 15.

Windell Carbaquil, 17, a recent high school graduate of the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College in Talisay, on the other hand, was declared the winner in the math and science quiz in the city, the press release said.

The winners received 15,000 in cash prize each, and will represent their hometown in the district-wide grand finals on May 27, at the Victorias City Coliseum, the press release also said.

Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District), rallied the support of various community sectors for the next round of eliminations that started this week with the competition in spelling, math and science among the elementary and high school qualifiers from the barangays.

A brainchild of Benitez, “Brainsbee” started in 2009 to provide opportunities for youths in all of the 115 barangays of the 3rd District to shine; and has unified the local government units, barangays, schools, neighbors and families, to build a better future for the young people, the press release added.*
