‘Don’t hike veggie prices’

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala is appealing to all local vegetable vendors to refrain from taking advantage of this calamitous situation by increasing the prices of their commodities.

“There is no reason for price increase in vegetables because the effect of the monsoon rains to the crops is minimal,” Alcala said yesterday.

He said prices of vegetables in Benguet had gone down because the crops are wet and they have to be harvested prematurely.

”So, I am appealing to you in the media to help us stop this untoward action of the vegetable dealers,” Alcala said.

Besides, he said, there are no thoroughfares from the provinces particularly Benguet that were closed, more so, they do not have any reason to increase their prices.

Alcala explained that there was no wind that could aggravate damages, it is only water which would easily subside and the plants could recover in due time.*PNA
