Ex-cop, 3 others nabbed
for illegal STL operation

A former policeman and three others allegedly involved in the illegal operation of the Small Town Lottery were arrested by the police in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police identified those arrested as retired policeman Henry Ferrer, 63, and Ramero Sausa, “alias Apple”, 52, both of Brgy. Talaban, Riza Cervañez, 29 of Brgy. 2 Poblacion; and Yvonne Bayles, 21, of Brgy. To-oy, all in Himamaylan.

Police recovered two bundles of unused STL collection report forms, an STL receipt, eight pieces of used collection report forms, three ballpens and P42 in cash from Ferrer, while two bundles of unused STL collection report forms, two calculators, a ballpen and P1,518.75 were seized from Sausa.

A bundle of used STL collection report forms, two pieces of STL receipt, 9 sheets of STL draw results and P448 in cash were also confiscated from Cervañez and Bayles, the police said.

The four are now in the custody of the Himamaylan City police and charges are being readied against them.

Meanwhile, two teenagers were arrested by the police in Cauayan town, Negros Occidental at about 7:30 p.m. Monday for alleged illegal jai- alai operations.

The teenagers, aged 16 and 17, whose names are being withheld by the DAILY STAR, are residents of San Nicolas Street in Brgy. Poblacion.

They were reportedly caught while in the act of collecting bets for jai- alai in Sitio Omiles in Brgy. Poblacion.

The police recovered two cellular phones, a ballpen, two tally sheets for jai-alai with the label “Meredien Vista Gaming Corporation,” and P90 in cash from the teenagers during their arrest.*APN

2 with arrest warrants fall

Two men with arrest warrants for various violations were arrested in the cities of Cadiz and San Carlos, Negros Occidental Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rocky Batigas, 26, of Punta Cabahug Street, Brgy. Z-6, Cadiz City was arrested by the team led by city police chief, Supt. Arnel Arpon, near his residence at about 11 a.m. Tuesday, for attempted homicide.

The arrest warrant for Batigas was issued by Municipal Trial Court in Cities Judge Reginald Fuentebella, who set his bail at P12,000.

Meanwhile, Johnrey Egay, 21, of Brgy. Buluangan, in San Carlos charged for violation of the child abuse law was arrested at his residence in San Carlos City, in the province at about 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Egay was arrested by the San Carlos City police led by Insp. Roman Salazar, Jr. on the strength of an arrest warrant issued by Municipal Trial Court in Cities Judge Danilo Amisola who set his bail at P80,000.*LMR

Security plans for
Nuncio visit underway

The Bacolod City Police will meet next week on the security plans for the arrival in Bacolod City of Giuseppe Pinyo, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, on February 13.

The Papal Nuncio will be the guest of honor at the opening ceremonies of the National Conference of the Diocesan Directors and Executive Officers of the Commission on Family and Life.

Bacolod City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, said yesterday they do not have the itinerary of the Papal Nuncio yet, but he assured that they will provide him adequate security.

The conference is being organized by the Pope John Paul II National Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, in partnership with the Episcopal Commission on Family and Life, and is slated from February 13 to 17

It aims to bring together the directors and executive officers of the Commission on Family and Life of the different dioceses all over the country, as well as the national officers of family life movements and heads and teachers of Catholic schools.*APN
