in first half investments

Investments in Negros Occidental during the first half of 2007 reached P1.041 billion, figures of the local office of the Department of Trade and Industry show. But this year's total investments generated through business name registrations is way below than last year's P6.244 billion as of end-June 2006.

DTI renews business name registrations every five years.

Based on the DTI figures, investments in January totaled PP434.034 million; February, P127.304 million; March, P71.292 million; April, P109.769 million; May, P38.433 million; and June, P160.633 million.

Bacolod inquiring about
cyber corridor status

A resolution inquiring from the President the status of the move for the inclusion of Bacolod City and the Western Visayas region under the coverage of "cyberservices corridor project" was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod recently.

The resolution, coursed through the Office of the Executive Secretary and the Commission on Information and Communications Technology, is inquiring about the status of Bacolod and Western Visayas under the project especially in the efforts to improve the educational system and increase the human resource capital for the ICT sector in Western Visayas.

It said the CyberServices Corridor project is an ICT channel running over 600 miles across the country, from Baguio City in north and Zamboanga down south of the archipelago.

DA wants Guimaras
to be fisheries hub

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will develop Guimaras as a fisheries hub following the launching of a P5 million coral garden project in Nueva Valencia town and P5 million worth of aquaculture livelihood projects next month.

The project is part of the Department of Agriculture thrust of raising the fisheries sector's output, a government press release said.

The DA said that more funds will be allocated for the fisheries subsector this year to bankroll hunger mitigation programs as well as production enhancement projects that would help sustain its impressive performance in 2007, create more jobs and raise incomes of small fisherfolk. BFAR Director Malcolm Sarmiento said additional funding will be given to various BFAR offices nationwide, including its 16 regional offices and seven fishermen's training centers.
