RP 5 trims China,
stays in contention
MUST-WIN SCENARIO VS. JORDAN TONIGHT
BY CEDELF TUPAS

The 22-year losing streak to China could not have ended at a better time for the Philippines, at a better place and at a better tournament.

And in Tokushima, Japan last night, the Filipino cagers may also have shaved a few hundred kilometers out of their long and treacherous trail to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

With their back against the "Great Wall", the Nationals scaled new heights, coming back from several double-digit deficits to pull off an inspiring 79-74 win over a Chinese squad badly missing its biggest stars.

St. John's Institute and Doņa Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School "B" shared the limelight by snaring the 12-Under and 15-Under titles, respectively at the close of the inaugural Mayor Jose "Oti" Montelibano Cup at the Natalio Velez Gym in Silay City.

Montserrat went on a third-quarter tear and held off Son Bosco Technical Institute's late rally for a 77-69 victory, after St. John's cruised to a 77-58 triumph over Barangay Rizal in the 12-Under finals.

Guard Kenneth De Leon, later named Most Valuable Player, registered a game-high 25 points to lead SJI, which swept all of its six games in the tournament.

WNC, La Salle claim
Mighty 7-a-side titles

Robert Canedo struck with barely a minute left to power West Negros College "A" past Shakey's, 1-0, in the finals of the Mighty-WNC 7-a-side football tournament at the WNC pitch in Bacolod City Friday.

WNC "A" suffered its only loss at the hands of Shakey's in the group stage. The return showdown remained tight until Canedo's piledriver was slightly deflected by the Shakey's defenders before the ball rolled past the goal-line to lift the Wesnecans to the crown in the 16-team event. The women's crown went to an alumni team from the University of St. La Salle, which swept its three games over the USLS varsity team and two WNC squads.
