BIZMEN ASK
Arson behind fires?
BY ALEX PAL

Investing in a strong padlock may not anymore guarantee that your building is safe from intruders. Burglars in Dumaguete City today, don't break doors anymore to get in a building - they pass through the roof. And if that's not enough, they burn the building on their way out.

The telltale signs of holes on the roofs of several burned buildings say it all, causing jitters among the members of the business community.

Some Dumaguete businessmen, especially those victimized by this modus operandi, have issued calls to authorities to get to the bottom of these incidents but still, Dumaguete keeps waking up to the sound of fire engines in the dead of night because of this same crime.

IN LARENA
Tighten security, police
urge banks, pawnshops
BY RENE GENOVE

The Larena police station in Siquijor province has urged banks and pawnshops to strengthen their own security, because of the string of robberies in the region.

Larena chief of police, Senior Inspector Enrique Limbaga Belciņa, stressed the need for firearm proficiency training among policemen and security guards as directed by Supt. Lyndon Lawas, PRO-7 chief of the Firearms, Explosives, Security Agency and Guards Supervisory Sector. Belciņa said it is imperative to provide specialized training for security guards as they play a critical role in thwarting robberies.

At least 19 security guards from Larena town took a refresher course recently, in coordination with the local government and the Siquijor Pistol and Rifle Association at the Cang-allas Shooting Range.

Fake sales
campaign gears up
BY RENE GENOVE

The National Consumer Affairs Council has warned major retailers, local government units and other concerned consumer groups in Negros Oriental to be more vigilant about deceptive and unfair sales practices.

The Council, in coordination with local Consumer Advocates Inc. and the Department of Trade and Industry, conducted a consumer empowerment campaign last week to provide information on consumer welfare protection, as well as effective linkages in information network system. CAI president Deo Salem said the activity is needed to enlighten consumers on their rights and responsibilities. Salem said people should not always be dependent on government agencies, and should seek redress on grievances directly against any fraudulent seller or supplier of products and services.

He said, however, that going to the right agency speeds up the process and helps resolve issues effectively.
