seize
9th straight title

West Negros College summoned its vast championship experience in the face of a relentless challenge from CEDAR College to record an 85-80 win Saturday for its ninth straight NOPSSCEA collegiate basketball crown before a capacity crowd at the WNC Gym
. Reserve swingman Rundy Baydo, center Virgilio Dapar and power forward Jason Mellarin bailed out the Mustangs with timely baskets in the final quarter. The Cadiz-based cagers kept it close with three-point shooting and scrappy offensive rebounding, key factors in shocking victories over perennial contenders University of St. La Salle, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos and Colegio San Agustin Bacolod in the run-up to the championship match.
But the Mustangs simply had a deeper bench and the size
advantage, and the win, which completed a seven-game sweep of this year's
tournament, merely validated their dominating presence in the league.

in stirring title triumph Staring at a 15-point deficit heading into the final quarter against a team with a winning tradition, unheralded Silay Institute's bid for a first-ever NOPSSCEA high school basketball crown looked doomed. But a band of heroes emerged one after the other to fuel SI to an improbable 84-76 overtime victory over West Negros College at the WNC Gym in Bacolod City Saturday. "This win was all about heart," said SI's rookie coach Ryan Nabor,
whose squad was cheered on by SI students wearing blue and yellow
shirts, complemented by a boisterous drum-beating gallery. "We really
wanted to win this for the school. This is a big achievement for
us," he added. |

PN-Bago
claim Anchored by lightflyweight Albert Pabila, the combined squad of Philippine Navy and Bago City snared top team honors in the 2007 Smart National Open Boxing Championships, which closed Saturday in Cagayan De Oro City. The PN-Bago squad bagged five gold medals and a bronze to bag
the overall crown with Pabila typifying the mighty show with a referee-stopped-contest-outscored
over Davao City's Frederick Dela Cruz in the finals. Pabila, who
had upset an Olympic berth-seeking Harry Taņamor in the preliminaries,
was later complemented by pinweight Bill Vicera lightweight Joegin
Ladon, welterweight Larry Semillano and light heavy weight Junie
Tizon who all won their gold medal matches in contrasting fashion.
