+Reigning WBO bantamweight king Gerry Penalosa and WBO superbantam
titlist Daniel Ponce De Leon will meet in a highly-anticipated rematch
in February, a report on philboxing.com said.
Golden Boy Promotions vice-president and international matchmaker
Eric Gomez confirmed the rematch and said that the Penalosa-De Leon
tiff should be every Filipino's dream fight. "We are now working
on this one. It should take place in February in the Philippines,
and we are currently working with our partner SGG Promotions and
ALA to do it there," Gomez told philboxing.com editor Salven Lagumbay.
Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani, who heads the SGG Sports
Promotions, also confirmed yesterday the plan to do a rematch between
the two world champions, indicating that television giant ABS-CBN
will air the fight, the boxing website said.
"It should take place sometime middle of February," the Filipino
promoter said.
Penalosa is coming off a seventh-round stoppage of Mexican
Jhonny Gonzalez in the World Cup on Aug. 11 to win the WBO title.
De Leon, who owns a controversial win over Penalosa in their
first encounter in April, beat Filipino Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista
via technical knockout. *
