Negrense doctor
sets book launch

A Negrense doctor, whose inventions in the field of orthopedics are being used in numerous countries, is launching a book on Oct. 12 at the Fully Booked bookstore at Fort Bonifacio Global City, a press release from organizers said.

Proceeds will be channeled into the Bone Bank of the Philippine Orthopedic Institute Research Foundation.

Dr. Ramon Gustilo is launching his autobiography "I Will Not Be Poor", an inspirational story of his childhood in Manapla as a farmer's son, and his eventual success as a bone doctor and inventor in the U.S.

Gustilo said the proceeds will go to the bone bank because he understands the importance of the center, being run by a non-stock non-profit body aiming to improve the practice of orthopedics in the country.

He added that there will be another book-launching activity on Oct. 22 in Minnesota, U.S.A., the state that saw the rise of his career and where he served as chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery of Hennepin County Medical Center, a university hospital, the press release said.

The proceeds from the book sale in the U.S. will also go to the Gustilo Medical Education Center, a facility the doctor founded in the U.S. for orthopedic surgeons.

Gustilo said that he hopes his autobiography, which is published by Don Bosco Press, will also be a guide for doctors and other professionals in balancing their career and family life.

A product of Manapla Elementary School and Negros Occidental High School, Gustilo has over a dozen patented technologies under his belt.

His two most successful technologies are the Genesis Knee System and the Biological Ingrowth Anatomic System Hip System. They are widely used in most parts of North America, Europe, and Japan, the press release added.*

Resto jungle at plaza

A food kiosk at the MassKara Festival site at the Bacolod Public Plaza with its "out-of-the-box" concept has caught the fancy of festival goers and passersby, a press release from festival organizers said.

The "ambulatory resto-bar" or jeepney-restobar of the Saging Resto Bar Kiosk has become an attraction for the MassKara Festival and is one of the most visited kiosks at the plaza.

The kiosk is likened to a "resto in the middle of the jungle" by most of its patrons who came to experience wining, dining and partying at the kubo type resto-bar that is mounted on the top of a passenger-jeepney.

It is an exclusive-type of kiosk which can accommodate almost 24 persons, with four mini-tables and a last supper table that is best for small gatherings. The installation was done with the help of architect Lucillus Buyco, the press release added.*
