Cops
foil highway robbery Policemen yesterday
claimed to have foiled a possible occurrence of another highway robbery incident
after they arrested an armed ex-Army soldier and his companion for violation of
the Comelec gun ban in Brgy. Progreso, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.
Arrested were Jose Wennie Magtulis, 47, a former member of the Philippine Army,
and his companion identified as Norman Terante, 42, both residents of Brgy. San
Jose, Binalbagan. Members of the Binalbagan police alert
team recovered a .45 caliber Colt pistol with ammunition, two bonnets, two hats,
two sweatshirts and a camouflage uniform from the two arrested suspects.
Senior Inspector Gary Alan Resuma said Magtulis and Terante are suspects in the
series of highway robbery-hold up incidents in Binalbagan and Himamaylan City.
Police investigations showed that Magtulis tried to draw his pistol, when he and
his companion were apprehended by policemen at the poblacion of Binalbagan.
Magtulis, who was disarmed, denied participation in the highway robbery incidents
in the town and neighboring areas. Resuma said the recovery
of bonnets and other personal belongings from the two suspects bolstered their
suspicions that they were involved in previous highway robberies.
He said highway robbers usually hit their targets who are small planters, during
the distribution of sugar quedans on Thursdays. Charges for
violation of the Comelec gun ban and direct assault against a person in authority
are slated to be filed by the Binalbagan police against the two suspects who are
now in jail.*GPB back to top
