Negrense world boxing champion Donnie Nietes decided to come home from his training base in Cebu Thursday, expecting Bacolod City officials to make good of its promise that he will be recognized during the city's charter day program.

It seemed though that Nietes, the World Boxing Organization mini flyweight champion who was born in Murcia but grew up in Barangay Granada, did not merit attention, at all.

“No hard feelings. I'm taking the midnight trip back to Cebu later,” he told the DAILY STAR last night.

Marvin Ting of West Negros College grabbed the spotlight yesterday when he ruled the junior's division of the 15 th Shell National Active Chess Championships at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong.

WNC chess coach Jose Dante Albao told the DAILY STAR last night that Ting, a BS Criminology senior, finished with 6.5 points after nine rounds to hold off the challenge of Lehidan Laceste of NCR.

Another WNC player, Brylle Arellano, placed third with 6.5 points, the same output with Ting and Laceste. But Ting prevailed in the tie-break, owing to his victory over Laceste, whom he defeated using his improvised queen-pawn-king variation opening.
