Economy getting stronger: Arroyo
I-TAX SYSTEM LAUDED

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday expressed confidence of a stronger Philippine economy in the coming months amid government's various and sometimes, aggressive approaches to financial reforms.

Arroyo addressed a huge crowd of national and international fiscal management players and local government officials, at the opening of the 1st International Conference on Local Government Financing held in Dumaguete City yesterday.

The two-day gathering, hosted by the German government through the German Technical Cooperation Agency and the provincial government of Negros Oriental, focuses on a new technology, I-Tax, designed to improve and enhance tax collection efficiency of local government units.

Alternative fuel program gets
support from tuba-tuba farms

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's thrust to make the country independent from imported crude oil got its much needed support from the development of jatropha plantations in Negros Oriental, a press release from the Office of the Press Secretary said yesterday.

The development of jatropha plantations will also create new jobs in the countryside, another thrust of the President to improve the lives of the people, the press release said.

Upon her arrival in Dumaguete City at noon yesterday, the President was given a briefing by former Negros Oriental Rep. Herminio Teves on the Tamlang Valley Jatropha Plantation where some 50,000 hectares of private land are being planted to jatropha beginning last July, in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Migrant workers helping
reduce poverty: Jinggoy

Philippine Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada highlighted the great contribution to global economies by overseas Filipino workers and other international migrant workers, in his landmark address yesterday to the International Parliamentary Union in Geneva , Switzerland , a press release from his office said.

Estrada said it is estimated that there are about 200 million international migrants who assume a major role in promoting development and poverty reduction in their countries of origin, and making significant contribution in the destination countries.
