3 killed in shooting,
stabbing incidents

Two men were killed in stabbing and shooting incidents in Barangays Banago and Handumanan, Bacolod, Saturday while another man was stabbed dead Friday, at the city’s downtown area, the police said.

Elbert Trofo, 35, of Purok Riverside in Brgy. Banago, was shot, allegedly by a certain Jason Decena, 20, of Purok Tinagong Paraiso, also of the barangay, near his house at about 2 p.m. Saturday.

Station 3 deputy chief, Insp. Larry Teovisio, told the DAILY STAR that their initial investigation showed that Decena could have mistaken Trofo for his foe when he shot him.

Trofo sustained two gunshot wounds on his back and was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival, while Decena evaded arrest.

Two empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol and another two deformed slugs of the same caliber were recovered at the crime scene. Decena’s black jacket, meanwhile, was recovered in a vacant lot beside the Pueblo Subdivision during the hot pursuit operation, Teovisio said.

About seven hours later, a man working in a candy store in Brgy. Handumanan, was stabbed by his co-worker allegedly over an old grudge.

Senior Insp. Ruel Culanag, Station 10 chief, identified the victim as Menard dela Cruz, 20, of Silay City, Negros Occidental, and the suspect as “alias Ruben” of Murcia town, also of the province, who fled after the incident, bringing with him the bladed weapon he used.

Dela Cruz sustained multiple stab wounds and died on the spot. The search to arrest the suspect continues, Culanag said.

Meanwhile, barker Joeffrey Valdez, 32, of Purok King Fisher in Brgy. Banago, was declared dead on arrival at the CLMMRH, a few minutes after he was stabbed at the junction of Gatuslao and Luzuriaga Streets, Bacolod at about 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Police Officer 2 Johnny dela Peña, case investigator, said he believes that the suspect “alias Nonoy”, who evaded arrest, harbored anger at the victim, whom he suspected of stealing fruits from the store where he works.*APN

Cops arrest 2
‘snatchers’

Two suspected snatchers, who victimized a call center agent, were apprehended in a follow-up operation by Station 2 policemen in Brgy. 3, Bacolod City.

Station 2 chief, Senior Insp. Robert Dejucos, identified the suspects as Gerald Baron, 23, of Purok Kamunsil in Brgy. 3, and Jason Joellegue, 19, of Purok Mapinalangaon in Brgy. 35, both in Bacolod.

Complainant Shena Palo, 23, of Purok Magnolia in Brgy. 7 and employed by the Focus call center at Lacson Street, Bacolod, told the police that she was about to enter her workplace at about 2 a.m. yesterday when Joellegue snatched her wallet that contained P3,000 in cash and identification cards.

Palo sought the help of Station 2 policemen, who conducted a follow-up operation in Purok Nangka in Brgy. 3 and arrested the suspects about 15 minutes later, Dejucos said. Policemen seized P2,500 in cash from Joellegue and a seven and a half-inch long bladed weapon from Baron, he added.

The victim’s wallet, that contained P972 in cash, pictures and identification cards, was recovered later in a vacant lot in Purok Nangka, police records showed.

Palo positively identified the suspects when they were presented to her at Police Station 2.

The suspects told the media that they are underage but Dejucos said it’s up to them to present their birth certificates to prove their claims.

Bacolod City Police director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz said that the successive arrests of robbers, snatchers and pickpockets only showed that their luck is getting slimmer.

The campaign against street criminals will be continued to ensure a peaceful observance of the Holy Week, he said.*APN
