Police to intensify campaign
vs. prostitution in Bacolod

The Bacolod City Task Force Magdalena will intensify its campaign against prostitution, and is ready to file charges against pimps and call boys found exploiting women and minors, Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, city police director, said yesterday.

De la Paz, who heads the Task Force, said they have to put an end to the rampant exploitation of women and minors, and this has to begin with the pimps and call boys, who make prostitution their business.

He said the police has been arresting pimps and call boys, but they have not filed cases against them. The decision to charge pimps and call boys in court was made because they have become habitual law violators, he said. “This is a vicious cycle because whenever these offenders get out of jail, they return to prostitution”, he said.

There is also a need to contain the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases, as 50 percent of the apprehended sex workers have tested positive for STDs, de la Paz said.

The Task Force will inspect the places where prostitution reportedly takes place, like the public plaza, the reclaimed area, and entertainment bars and night spots in the city.

It will also determine if all the women working in the entertainment bars have been issued pink cards by the City Health Office, to make sure that they are free from STDs.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia will meet with the Task Force members this week to discuss plans and strategies against the prostitution problem, de la Paz said.

The TF includes Councilor El Cid Familiaran, chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Police; Insp. Jovy Cabcaban of the Women and Children Police Desk; Sally Abelarde, head of the Bacolod Social Services and Development;

Dr. Salome Biñas of the Bacolod City Health Office; Sonny Petierre, head of the Bacolod Permits and Licensing Division; Gemma Ledesma, schools division superintendent; and Councilor Keith Ramos, president of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation.*LTG

Silay Regional Trial Court Judge Felipe Banzon has recommended a total of P240,000 bail for the temporary release of Quiamco.
