‘Strengthen disaster
contingency measures’
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The president of the Association of Barangay Councils in Dumaguete City, Albert Aquino, called for an improved disaster contingency plan to avoid similar disaster through flooding as that brought by tropical storm “Sendong” in Dumaguete in December 17 last year.

Aquino said he believes there were lapses that should be addressed by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

During an assessment and evaluation of the city government’s disaster response, Tuesday, Aquino, who is the ABC representative in the City Council, said many barangays were not prepared.

There was also no proper coordination among the CDRRMC, city and barangay officials and nobody in charge of a command center.

He said Randy Saldua, CDRRMC coordinator, was out in the field helping in rescue operations when he should have been manning the CDRRMC operations command center.

Another meeting is scheduled tomorrow between Dumaguete Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria and barangay officials for evaluation and assessment of the disaster contingency plans of the city.*JFP
