‘SENDONG’ AFTERMATH
Valencia speeding up
water supply restoration

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Mayor Ricky Gonzalez of Valencia, Negros Oriental, reacting to mounting complaints from his constituents, said the town is doing its best to expedite the restoration of water supply to households, commercial and public establishments in the town.

At least 90 percent of the population still has little or no water supply, after “Sendong” triggered flashfloods that cut off major water distribution lines.

Gonzalez said the major water source of the town is in Maiti that takes at least six hours walk to reach.

Typhoon relief goods arrives

A member of the Silliman University community in Dumaguete City called on all Negrenses spared by the wrath of tropical storm “Sendong” to help in any manner, or by volunteering in relief operation activities.

Nick Elman brought volunteers yesterday in unloading more than 400 tons of relief goods from the Philippine Navy ship, BRP Bacolod City.

The relief goods are part of the project of the ABS-CBN’s Sagip Kapamilya program for Sendong victims in Negros Oriental. They will be distributed this week in Sendong-affected areas and will end with a medical mission at the Katipunan Hall in Silliman.

‘Strengthen disaster
contingency measures’
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The president of the Association of Barangay Councils in Dumaguete City, Albert Aquino, called for an improved disaster contingency plan to avoid similar disaster through flooding as that brought by tropical storm “Sendong” in Dumaguete in December 17 last year.

Aquino said he believes there were lapses that should be addressed by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

During an assessment and evaluation of the city government’s disaster response, Tuesday, Aquino, who is the ABC representative in the City Council, said many barangays were not prepared.
