Sinulog queen named
in Kabankalan City

Bon Louise Yap Rana, 18, representing Brgy. 1 was crowned Negros Sinulog Queen 2012, in the recent Sinulog Festival celebration in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Rana is a second year Medical Technology student at Silliman University in Negros Oriental, a Kabankalan press release said.

First runner-up was Pamela Len Sanagustin, 20, third year student of Computer Technology at Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, Alijis Branch, in Bacolod City representing Brgy. Oringao.

Second runner-up was Rea Mae Mulle Talabon, 20, from Himamaylan City, a BSED graduate of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, representing Brgy. Locotan, the press release said.

There were 14 contenders for the title at the beauty pageant held at the K-Center.

The other candidates and their sponsors were: Cristina Lewis, Brgy. 3; Kathleen Matillano, Brgy. Magballo, April Rose Osilleva, Brgy. Tampalon; April Rose Alquisola, Brgy. Pinaguinpinan; Guirilyn Vendiola Kila, Brgy. Tabugon; Richelle Espida, Brgy.Tagoc; Kreenz Amor Cordero, Brgy. V; Mayzeeh Sona Balquin, Brgy. Carol-an, Rhea Marie Grandea, Brgy. Bantayan; Maru Macalipsay, Brgy. Hilamonan; and Danielle Louise Relunio, Brgy. Inapoy, the press release added.*

Hugyaw Kansilay
joins cultural tilt

“Hugyaw Kansilay Festival” of Silay City in Negros Occidental is an official entry of Negros Occidental in the Kasadyahan Regional Cultural Competition 2012 in Iloilo City on January 21, a Silay press release said.

Mayor Jose Montelibano, head of delegation, said the Department of Tourism has chosen “Hugyaw Kansilay Festival” because the streetdance focuses on how the sugar industry flourished in Silay, thus, making the place the “Paris of Negros” at the turn of the century and the Seat of Arts, Culture and Ecotourism in the present generation.

Montelibano added also the entry depicts the “Legend of Silay” through merrymaking, fantastic sound, and play of colors and use of patadyong.

The executive staff composed of Marissa Montelibano, president of Hugyaw Silay Inc.; Susan Velez, executive assistant for tourism; Jose Lopez, barangay captain of Guinhalaran; Joedith Gallego, barangay captaon of E. Lopez; Severino Pacete, tourism officer; and Solomon Locsin, consultant for historical research.

The tribe leader is Achilles Corteza, cultural affairs officer; and the assistant tribe leader is Gerle Hilado – Sulmaca, OIC of Community Affairs Office, the press release said.

The street dance is choreographed by Ronnie Gomea assisted by Clarisse Salmingo with Mike Golez as music director.

Tourism officer, Ver Pacete, said the champion in this contest will receive Php 125,0000.00 and four other runners-up will also receive cash awards, and there will be minor awards for best in street dance, performance, choreography, music, costume, and outstanding choreographer.

There will be nine competing tribes and four non-competing tribes.

Kansilay dancers will have their farewell performance for the Negrenses from Brgy. Guinhalaran to Silay Public Plaza today, the press release said.*
