The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Dumaguete branch is intensifying its coin recirculation program.
The Fun Run and Dance entitled “Barya Para sa Kalikasan” held on Saturday was an initiative of BSP Dumaguete to promote the coin recirculation program and to help in the environmental preservation and conservation.
Divina Salva-Labitad of the BSP Economic and Financial Learning Center said they are closely working with nongovernment organizations and the academe in the campaign.
They were able to collect more than P30,000 worth of coins from the fun run and dance registration fee paid by some 1,300 participants who joined the activity that started at Freedom Park and ended at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Coliseum in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Labitad said the participants were required to pay their registration in small coin denominations like five, 10, and 25 centavos.
The coins collected will be turned over to Robinsons Mall which has the bigger coin requirement and is the BSP partner in the campaign.
Proceeds from the activity will be used to fund environmental projects in Negros Oriental that will be implemented by 350.org, the production of mangrove propagules and reef domes to rehabilitate and maintain Silliman Beach area, and support the recycling initiatives and the conduct of intensive public information and education campaign on solid waste segregation and disposal management.
BSP Dumaguete thanked Negrenses for supporting the campaign.
Labitad said they are now conducting education and information campaign on the proper handling and usage of bank notes. They are also encouraging the public to use coins, especially the smaller denominations, when they go shopping or go to the market and grocery stores.*MA
