AWS workshop held
A seminar-workshop on the use of the automatic weather station for disaster preparedness and monitoring was conducted by the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, at the Capitol in Bacolod City recently, a press release said.
About 100 rescuers, radio operators, disaster risk reduction management officers from local government units in Negros Occidental, representatives from nongovernment organizations and the Negros Rescue Federation, and Capitol employees participated in by the city, aimed to provide weather monitoring skills in critical areas in the Philippines and to enhance climate and flood forecasting and warning services.
PAGASA senior weather specialist, Vivien Esquivel, presented an overview of the project, including climate variability and preparedness; while Arnel Manoos, weather facilities specialist, discussed the operation and maintenance of AWS, the automated version of the traditional weather station intended to save manual labor and enable measurements from remote areas, the press release also said.
Other topics taken up were “Weather Systems Affecting the Philippines” by Sharon Juliet Arruejo, and “Flood Forecasting and Warning Services of PAGASA” by Danny Flores, the press release added.*
