Tay Tung tracksters
to join Ateneo team

Six senior members of the Bacolod Tay Tung High School athletics team, who will complete their secondary education in March next year, were tapped by the Ateneo de Manila University to join their varsity squad.

Tay Tung athletics coach Amado Joguan said Miguel Guevarra, Roland Malate, Hannah Kristia Malate, Shaira Hernandez, Rhandonn Aga, and Joebe Panhilason Jr., will join the Ateneo team after they comply with all the requirements set by the school.

The Malate siblings, children of the late BTTHS athletics coach and police officer Rolando Malate, along with Aga and Panhilason have already taken the Ateneo entrance exam, while Guevarra and Hernandez will take the test in January 2013, Joguan said.

Earlier, BTTHS vice chairman for sports development Jose Montalbo negotiated with the ADMU head for athletics, Misael Perez, to offer a scholarship program for the athletes from Tay Tung.

Joguan said the possible inclusion of the six athletics members of his team into the roster of ADMU will enhance their skills and open doors of opportunities for them.

Guevarra, a sprinter, made his mark in the 100m and 200m dash at the NOPSSCEA competition as well as the 2011 Batang Pinoy Visayas Championship in Dumaguete last year, along with Roland Malate, who excels in 1500m run and the 3000 steeple chase.

Aga is a long distance runner who shows good marks in 1500m and 3,000m run, while Panhilason is Tay Tung’s best bet in shot put and discus throw.

Hannah Malate specializes in 400m, 800m, and 3,000m, while Hernandez is a 100m and 200m sprinter.

Joguan said the six athletes are presently training with the other members of the BTTHS athletics team in preparation for the 2012 Batang Pinoy Visayas Championship set on November 21 – 25 in Tacloban City.*NAB
