Operation Smile Negros
Mission slated in Silay

The Operation Smile International Negros Mission 2012 will be held at the Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, Negros Occidental, Nov. 12 to 16, and the medical team will arrive from Manila today, a press release from the group said.

Tomorrow, the team will conduct screening for possible patients at the TLJP Hospital from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the surgery will be performed next week, also at the hospital, the press release said.

Operation Smile is a U.S.-based medical mission that provides free reconstructive surgery to indigent children and adults born with cleft lip and palate and other facial deformities, with the H.O.P.E. Volunteers Foundation Inc. as coordinator.

The Foundation, that is celebrating its 25th anniversary, is a private, non-profit organization, that aims to pursue the socio-economic development of Negros Occidental through programs that help transform disadvantaged groups into self-reliant communities and through support of the various socio-economic services by government and non-governmental agencies, the press release added.*

Students attend
journalism seminar

Thirty-four high school students participated in the two-day journalism seminar conducted recently by the Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative Inc. in Brgy. Tapi National High School, Kabankalan City, a press release from NOCECO said.

Bryan Carvajal and Pia Sia Pico, both graduates of the University of St. La Salle Bacolod, and Eddie Yap, alumnus of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, discussed basic writing, news and feature writing, interview and headlining, the press release also said.

The students also participated in a workshop and received certificates of completion.*

4-yr. old leukemia
patient needs help

A four-year old child from Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod City, who has been diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, is now confined at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod and needs urgent medical attention.

RJ King was diagnosed with the disease in November last year and had numerous admissions at CLMMRH due to pallor and fever, his medical records show.

His father, Ronald, 34, a contractual construction worker is seeking the help of the DAILY STAR readers, saying his income is not enough to sustain the medical needs of his child.

His wife, Rowena, is a housewife and they also have an 11-year old son who is in school.

Any assistance for the patient may be coursed through the DAILY STAR office.*LTG

Cops undergo 5-day
physical fitness test

Around 3,100 personnel from the Negros Occidental and Bacolod City police are undergoing a five-day Physical Fitness Test that ends today at Camp Alfredo Montelibano in Bacolod City.

The activity is in line with the program of the Philippine National Police hierarchy, its press release said.

The second semester PFT, administered by a team from the Police Regional Office-6, was spearheaded by Superintendent Nilda Rapiz and Senior Insp. Edgar Anonoy. Another team from the PNP Regional Health Service, led by Chief Insp. Dexter Lopez, was sent by PRO-6 director, Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr., to ensure that all participants are physically fit and trim for the half-day PFT, the press release also said.

Personnel from NOPPO, Bacolod City Police Office, 6th Regional Public Safety Battalion and the National Support Units performed pull, push and sit-ups, and 100-meter sprint for those 34 years old and below.

NOPPO director, Senior Supt. Milko Lirazan, reminded the police to maintain their weight limits according to their age, by staying away from vices, like smoking and too much alcohol, by eating right and exercising regularly, to stay healthy for the performance of their duties, the press release added.*
