Campaign to build classrooms
launched in Negros Oriental

Negros Oriental has joined the roster of local governments that partnered with The Entire Nation Moves (TEN Moves!) campaign to help address the classroom gap in the country, a government press release said.

The campaign was launched at the Negros Oriental Convention Center last week with around 500 teachers, students, and representatives from local government units present.

Gov. Roel Degamo said the partnership is an affirmation of Negros Oriental’s commitment to closing the classroom gap while developing young leaders who will continue working for quality education.

He added that, under the program, more than 40 classrooms had been built and 30 more will be constructed in the province, the press release also said.

Senior director Mario Deriquito of the Ayala Foundation, a prime mover of the campaign, said it is an opportunity to showcase the power of unity across organizations, generations, and cities.

Under the campaign, donors are encouraged to donate P300 a month for 10 months to help build 10,000 classrooms.

Students of Silliman University already pledged P150,000, and the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Negros Oriental committed P5,000. The League of Student Governments in the province also promised to donate the proceeds of their fundraising activities, the press release said.

As of last month, 2,897 classrooms have been pledged for “Bayanihang Pampaaralan”, the mother campaign of TEN Moves. Of the total, 1,126 classrooms have been built.

More than P18 million in donations and pledges have also been raised to date, the press release added.*
