WNU teacher, family win
2nd Family Values award

The West Negros University Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers–Student Chapter is a finalist in the Visayas in the 10th Search for Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations, for their PET and Net Lifejacket project, a press release from the school said.

The PICE-SC, under engineers Rey Ramos and Joe Karlo Seva, is composed of 146 Civil Engineering students, with Josian Nepomuceno as president. They will compete with nine other organizations from the Visayas October 15-16 in Cebu City, for the final five slots to represent the area in the national finals.

The PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, and Net Lifejacket use fishing net with holsters for plastic bottles as floatation device. The lifejacket for children uses 20 pieces of 330 mL PET bottles, and 24 pieces of 500 mL plastic bottles for adults, filled with plastic litters and inserted in holsters so a user can stay afloat. It is also equipped with harness, whistle and potable water, the press release also said.

The jacket has been tested in the river, at sea and in the swimming pool, and costs less compared to commercial lifejackets by almost thrice its price, the press release added.*
