Cop facing murder charges

Police have filed murder charges against a trooper of the 614 th Provincial Mobile Group for the death of a 25-year-old man in Bago City, Negros Occidental, in what he justified as an act of “self-defense”.

Supt. Alex Belonio, Bago police chief, yesterday said the respondent, identified as PO1 Richard Retolosa, who is assigned at the 614 th PMG headquarters in Cauayan, is now detained at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology lock-up facilities in Bago.

The filing of murder charges and detention of Retolosa, was for the death of Jason Pahilanga, 25, in Brgy. Balingasag, in Bago City on Oct. 26.

Police investigations show that when Pahilanga, who was allegedly high on drugs, was advised by Retolosa to calm down and go home, he stabbed the cop in the left arm, Retolosa fired a warning shot with his M-14 assault rifle, but Pahilanga, reportedly pressed his attack, prompting the police officer to short him, police reports said.

Belonio said the M-14 rifle was surrendered by Retolosa to the Bago police. He also surrendered the bladed weapon allegedly used by the victim in stabbing him.*GPB
