A Negrense teacher has received the Bayaning Filipino Award for molding both children and adults in a place in southern Negros Oriental once dubbed as “no man's land.”

Monica Sison, from Valencia , Negros Oriental, was among the recipients of the recent Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino awards in the teachers category.

She was cited for her passion in helping and teaching children in a rebel-infested Barangay Talalak, Sta. Catalina, where she was referred to by the people as their “Nanay,” the awarding body said.

for drug charges

Three persons were sentenced to life imprisonment for drug charges yesterday and Wednesday, at the Hall of Justice in Barangay Piapi, Dumaguete City yesterday.

Regional Trial Court Branch 30 Judge Rafael Crescencio Tan Jr., found accused Randy Duran, resident of Poblacion 2 in Dumaguete, guilty beyond reasonable doubt of illegal possession of 54.45 grams of shabu found in a raid conducted by the National Bureau of Investigation more than two years ago. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined P500,000.

The court said under the law, possession of more than 50 grams of shabu or marijuana is punishable by life imprisonment, and Duran was found guilty for violating section 11, Article II of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
