Iloilo steals thunder
from Negros athletes
BY CEDELF P. TUPAS

ROXAS CITY --- Iloilo stole the thunder from Negros Occidental in all but three events in the last two days of action to win top overall honors in the Western Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association Meet here.

Staring at a 13-gold deficit at the end of Day 5, the prospects of a Negros comeback appeared bright Saturday morning when taekwondo delivered eight of a possible 12 golds at the Dinggoy Roxas Civic Center, while the women's volleyball team represented by University of St. La Salle and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and the women's chess squad went all the way to clinch titles for 10 more golds.

Local billiard bets
joining Pacman tilt

The Negros Billiard Stable is sending 11 players for the Manny Pacquiao 10-ball Panersera Pababa set Feb. 26-29 in General Santos City, manager and coach Christopher Palses said yesterday.

Palses, the 2006 Bacolod 9-Ball handicapping champion, said the NBS hopes to expose its players to different tournaments to become more competitive. "We have many good billiard players here and I think one of them will bring honor to Bacolod soon," he said.

Among the notable players in the Negros stable are Doha Asian Games campaigner Reynaldo Grandea, Panfilo Damuag and firecracker victim Jarry Pelayo.

Bacolod boxer
loses in Korea

Bacolod-born boxer Mark Jason Melligen suffered his first loss as a professional boxer when he was stopped by Korean light-welter champ Yong Sung Kim in eight rounds, despite leading on points over the weekend in Seoul, Korea.

The lack of stamina proved to be the downfall of the former Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, who appeared tired starting in the fifth round. His loss was hastened by body shots from the Korean, www.philboxing.com reported.

It was Melligen's first loss in seven fights. Meanwhile, San Carlos-born pug Gerry Penalosa, the former WBC and WBF super flyweight champion, arrived in Los Angeles Thursday night to prepare for his challenge against Daniel Ponce de Leon of Cuauhtemoc, Mexico.
