Championship weekend starts

Doņa Hortensia Salas Benedicto National High School, the only unbeaten team in the Negros eliminations of the Shakey's Girls Invitational Volleyball League, guns for an outright championship berth today when it goes up against University of St. La Salle-Integrated School.

The La Carlota-based DHSBNHS spikers go into the 8 a.m. match with the psychological edge, owing to their 19-25, 25-20, 25-21 win over the La Sallians during their elimination-round match June 30.

From there, DHSBNHS racked up three more victories to finish with an immaculate 5-0 slate at the end of the elimination round.

Among DHSBNHS' victims were defending champion Doņa Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School (25-19, 21-25, 25-19), La Consolacion College (25-19, 25-19) and St. Benilde School (25-18, 25-13).

The La Sallians, ranked No. 2, are hoping to ride on the momentum of their twin victories that capped their elimination-round stint in the six-team tournament. The winner of the DHSBNHS-USLS tussle will gain the first seat in Sunday's finals.

The loser, meanwhile, will play the winner of the match between third-ranked DMLMHS and No. 4 La Consolacion College for the second finals spot.

Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod locks horns with SBS, hoping to avoid the distinction as the sixth and last-placed squad in the tournament.

The champion of the Negros eliminations will see action in the national finals scheduled from July 18-22 also at the USLS College Covered Court.

Hope Christian School will represent Manila in the national finals, where the champions from Iloilo and Cebu are also seeing action. *CPT
