80 WV private schools
seeking for tuition raise

Eighty private schools in Western Visayas have applied for a tuition increase for the school year 2012-2013, Department of Education 6 regional director, Dr. Mildred Garay, said.

Garay said most of the schools have asked for a five-percent increase to fund school improvements, facilities, and teachers' salaries, among others.

She said the increase sought by these schools is minimal and still below the allowable of 10 percent.

Garay also said these are among the thousands of private schools existing region-wide whose tuition hike applications are under review.

“We are still validating their applications if they are within the rules and regulations of our office”, she said.

With this increase, Garay said they expect several students to transfer to other public schools when classes open.

She said public schools are welcoming these students and assure them of “proper accommodation”.*PNA
