Teachers trained
on organic farming

Elementary and high school teachers were trained in vegetable production using the organic and natural farming system for implementation in their schools through the “Gulayan sa Paaralan Project” of the Department of Agriculture.

Felicitas Neturada, GPP Region VI focal person, said yesterday said that the teachers handling Technology and Livelihood Education and Edukasyong Pantahanan ang Pangkabuhayan started their training yesterday and it will end today at the Governor’s Hall, in Bacolod City.

Neturada said the training aims to promote organic vegetable production, teaching students healthy living, promote vegetable consumption, and address malnutrition problems at the school level.

The DA will also provide garden inputs like 11 kinds of vegetable seeds, garden tools, spades,spading forks, sprinklers, trowels, tree seedlings, plastic potting bags, and other gardening equipment that the school needs, she said.

The teachers are trained in natural farming system, production and utilization of indigenous maicroorganisms, carbonized rice hulls, practices on vegetable production, sustainable strategies on organic farming, vegetable production container gardening, and pest control.

The next trainings are scheduled on Aug. 28-29, Sept. 4-7, and Sept. 11-12 for other teachers in the province.

The GPP is a project of the DA in partnership with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and the Department of Education-Negros Occidental. *LTG
