A former member of the New People’s Army was killed, but his sister, survived, although injured, when they were fired upon by three unidentified armed men at about 11 a.m. yesterday in Hacienda Santo Rosario, Brgy. Guimbalaon, Silay City, Negros Occidental.
Supt. Rosauro Francisco, Silay police chief, yesterday said the victim, identified as Simon Bernardio, reportedly a former NPA member, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
Francisco said Shirly Cacho, who was riding a motorcycle in tandem with her brother, Bernardio, on their way home after attending a meeting of the Lupon Tagapamayapa in Guimbalaon barangay proper, also sustained a gunshot wound. She is now being treated at the Teresita Lopez Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City.
Several empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol were recovered at the crime scene by the police who responded to the incident.
Francisco said they are also looking into claims that the killing of Bernardio, also a Lupon member of the barangay, may be related to the ambush of a certain Ronald Europa, a former member of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade, who survived an attempt on his life in Brgy. Guimbalaon, Silay City, in previous months.
Although Europa survived in the ambush, one of his arms had to be amputated, he added.*GPB back
