Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo has condemned the assassination of a barangay captain in Binobohan, Guihulngan City, who was supervising the distribution of relief goods.
Barangay Captain Roberto Ricabo was shot at close range by an unidentified man recently, inside the chapel where relief goods are stocked.
Degamo said he has directed the Philippine National Police to dig deeper into the case, and pursue all possible angles. He theorized that the killing could be in relation to the distribution of relief goods in the area.
He also said that in the past days or weeks, Ricabo had been contacting provincial administrator Arnel Francisco for projects and for relief assistance.
Degamo said that hours before his death, Ricabo had texted a radio personality in Dumaguete City on what he felt in the ongoing relief operation in Guihulngan City, and that he wanted his message to be relayed to the governor.
Ricabo had lambasted an agency in government for delivering food packs tainted with politics.
Degamo also directed the police to investigate reports that Ricabo was probably killed by hired guns or elements of the rebel movement.*JG
