Negros artists to hold
fellowship, workshop

The Art Association of Bacolod-Negros will gather visual artists from all over Negros Occidental for a cultural fellowship and workshop at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon in Bacolod City tomorrow to end the Arts Month celebration.

Multi-awarded Negrense artists Nunelucio Alvarado, Charlie Co and AAB-N treasurer Rafael “Paeng” Paderna, will be among the resource speakers at the event, with the theme “Kahilwayan Para sa Tali-Ambong (Freedom for the Arts)”. It will be held during the provincial government’s celebration of the 26th EDSA People Power Revolution.

Corazon Golez, AAB-N president, yesterday said the activity aims to provide a venue for visual artists in the province to interact with each other, and to enhance the spirit of cooperation and volunteerism for the promotion of Negrense visual arts.

It also aims to establish linkages with the provincial government in support of its thrust, and to come up with a covenant depicted in a mural painting, that will be donated to the provincial government, she said.

An on-the-spot painting contest for high school visual art students of the province will be conducted during the activity, she added.

Paderna said they expect about 200 artists to attend the activity.

He said they want to educate the public on what is art and its importance to the lives of the people. “We also hope that the government will take a serious look at art, because without a rich culture, we will never become a great nation,” he said.

Paderna also said that, with the activity, they hope to create awareness among the people especially the young, about the importance of art and culture in their lives.*CGS
