IN NEG. OR.
Solon bucks PNP
one-strike policy

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW & MARICAR ARANAS

Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District) is opposing the one-strike policy being implemented by the Philippine National Police in the province, saying this is unfair to the police chiefs because the problem of “swertres”, an illegal numbers game, is difficult to eliminate.

He challenged the Department of Interior and Local Government to explain why only Negros Oriental is implementing the policy. Arnaiz said he wondered if the policy is limited to the chief of police, or if it includes the PNP provincial directors.

Four police chiefs have been relieved in Negros Oriental because of their failure to stop the illegal version of the “swertres” operation in their areas of jurisdiction.

Police: Opening of
classes peaceful

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE & JUDY F . PARTLOW

The opening of classes in Negros Oriental and in Dumaguete City was generally peaceful, even with the first day of implementation of the K to 12 program.

The Dumaguete City police, headed by Supt. Crisaleo Tolentino, deployed 106 policemen to man the streets, especially near university belts and public elementary and high schools in the city.

He added that foot and mobile patrols as well as daily unannounced checkpoints will continue in the coming days as more students are expected to return to Dumaguete with the resumption of classes..

PARENTS URGED
Don’t panic over
K to 12 program
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW & MARICAR ARANAS

Dumaguete City Schools Division superintendent, Ramir Uytico, is advising parents not to panic over the implementation of the K to 12 basic education program that started this school year.

He said the program is part of the effort of the national government to improve the quality of basic education in the country.

It aims to improve the maturity of student, in preparation for college education, and the marketability of graduates to eliminate job mismatch, Uytico said.
