Distressed vessel reaches
Dumaguete port safely: PCG
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

More than 400 passengers and crew of an inter-island vessel that encountered engine trouble Monday midnight at the Tañon Strait, between Cebu and Negros Oriental, returned to the port of Dumaguete City, all safe and sound yesterday.

The Coast Guard Station in Dumaguete said M/V Georich of the George and Peter Lines left the Dumaguete port at around 11 p.m. Monday en route to Cebu. At around 1:27 a.m., one of its engines malfunctioned, causing it to drift some 3.2 nautical miles off Alcoy, Cebu.

PO2 Aldwin Chan of the Coast Guard quoted Crisologo Carollo, the captain of M/V Georich, as saying that in an assessment conducted by ship engineer Armando Baes, the turbo of auxiliary engine #2 had malfunctioned.

Sagarbarria explains
stand on Helmet law
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria yesterday stood pat on his decision to oppose the move of some members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod who have gone to court to stop the implementation of the Mandatory Helmet Law starting July 31.

Sagarbarria said it is wrong to sue the government for enforcing what is already a law, and no one can compel him to adopt a strategy that he does not believe in.

But he also said that while he may not agree with the pending legal action, he is looking at other venues to support the move of a large number of his constituents opposing Republic Act 10054, that orders motorcycle riders to use helmets.
