2,096 medals up for
grabs in WVRAA

Athletes from the six provinces  participating  in the 12th Western Visayas Regional Athletic Meet will  vie  for the top honors and the 2,096 medals offered during the weeklong competition.

With Negros Occidental playing host to this year’s edition of the annual school-based competition among elementary and high school athletes, Negrenses are expected to troop to thevenues in Bacolod City to cheer for the home team.

The meet will openMarch 12 at the Panaad Stadium with multi-division boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao as keynote speaker,  and  Murcia-born world champion boxer Donnie Nietes will join him in the VIP’s box at the stadium.

Romeo Sison, Department of Education Provincial Sports head, said ocular inspection of the athletes and coaches at their respective billeting areas will start on Friday.

Delegates from Aklan, among them, the elementary and high school athletes, cultural contestants, and special events participants, arrived in Bacolod CityMonday and proceeded to Rizal Elementary School where they will stay until the competition ends.

Most of the  bulk of Iloilo and Guimaras contingents are expected to arrive today, while  the Capiz delegation will be in the city on Saturday, Sison said.

        Aklan has a total of 367 athletes in elementary and secondary competition, 25 in cultural contest, and 21 in special events, while Iloilo has 389 athletes, 25 cultural contestants, and 24 special events’ participants.

        Antique which has 324 athletes and 25 cultural contestants, will notfield  any entry in the special events, while Capiz has 256 athletes, and 25 and 26 participants in the cultural and special events.

Guimaras has a total of 262 athletes, and 29 cultural and special events contestants, while the Negros delegation is composed of 381 athletes, 25 cultural contestants, and 33 special events participants.*NAB
