Region VI wins big in arnis

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan -Western Visayas surged high yesterday, snatching three gold and two silver medals in arnis before making a 1-2 finish in javelin throw as the 2012 Palarong Pambansa entered its third day at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.

Its three gold medals in arnis came in the Anyo event in secondary girls, double identical weapons in elementary boys and in individual Anyo event in elementary girls.

Crystal Aj Bartonico starred in individual Anyo event in secondary girls before the duo of John Lloyd Salazar and Jasper Jake Daliva prevailed in double identical weapon in elementary boys.

Western Visayas' other gold was given by Jessica Cabano-ang in the elementary girls.

Meanwhile, Pia Angelica of Western Visayas captured the gold in elementary girls triple jump by leaping 10.31 meters, followed by teammate Ailyn Tumbali who jumped 9.96 meters.

The silver medals of Western Visayas were given by John Lloyd Salazar in the Anyo event in arnis in elementary boys and Maria Chabelita Gonzalodo in the Anyo event in elementary girls.

Another silver was produced by Mary Anthony Diesta in the long jump secondary for girls.

Several more medals in arnis  were still being  contested up to 5  p.m. of May 8.

In the other arnis event, Maximo Cabiles of Central Visayas earned the gold in Anyo secondary boys with Mark Andrew Orcena topping the Anyo event in elementary boys. .

Meanwhile, Danilo Abarra gave host Region 1 its first gold medal when he threw the javelin to a distance of 51.51 meters, besting Jay Bryan Pachecoof Central Luzon who placed second at 51.44 and Renlyn John Gemolaga of Western Visayas in third place .

The winner in long jump secondary girls was Perlita Ynot of the National Capital Region who leaped a distance of 5.32 meters, followed by Mark Anthony Diesta of Western Visayas and Judy Mae Almasa of Northen Mindanao.

John Rodel Sariola produced the first gold medal for Bicol Region when he heaved the discuss to a distance of 28.39, followed by Southern Tagalog's Gidelon Arellano at 27.01; and Ronald Lacson, again of Western Visayas, at 24.54. meters.

In medal tally, NCR still leads the pack of 17 athletic delegations with seven gold medals, mainly from gymnastics being held at the Dagupan City Astrodome, followed closely by Western Visayas with six gold medals so far.*PNA
