Neg.Or. cops arrest 242
in anti-drugs campaign
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office reported yesterday its significant accomplishments in the campaign against all forms of criminality.

Records show that NOPPO, under Sr. Supt. Edward Esperat Carranza, has jailed 242 drug personalities and filed 236 drugs cases in court against them, in violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Anti-Drugs Law of 2001. Of the 242 persons arrested, 183 were drug pushers, 56 users and three were marijuana cultivators, the police added.

From September 2011 up to April this year, 176.324 grams of shabu and 3,284.87 grams of dried marijuana leaves were seized, while three marijuana plants were uprooted, with a total street value of P227,446.85.

On illegal gambling, 512 police operations were conducted that resulted in the arrest of 452 persons, the confiscation of bet money amounting to P427,771.80, and the filing of 297 cases in court, for violation of RA 9287.

The records add that 379 persons wanted for various offenses were accounted for, and another 68 in possession of 118 assorted and unlicensed firearms.

One significant accomplishment is the neutralization of six gun-for-hires in the province, Carranza said.

He identified them as Herman Escora and Renny Deocares, who were allegedly involved in a robbery with homicide case last January 19; Jasper Tanasan and Pacito Libron, accused in the shooting of Bayawan City Councilor Victoriano Alabastro in June 2011; and couple Jerry and Espedita Inocierta, who were linked to the killing of businessman Demetrio Larena III in October 2011.

Carranza added that NOPPO has also intensified the campaign against illegal logging to preserve the remaining forest of the province, resulting in the arrest of nine persons and the confiscation of four cargo trucks loaded with sawn lumber and 261 sacks of charcoal.*JG
