Corona attends
impeachment court

Rolly Espina

It did not surprise the majority of readers and TV viewers that Chief Justice Renato Corona appeared yesterday of the Senate impeachment court.

But, contrary to most perceptions, Corona walked into the Senate and did not appear very weak as had previously been painted by the defense. Instead, hanging on to the shoulders of his wife, Cristina, Corona slowly strode his way to the chamber.

But that’s not the point. He underwent some uneasy examination by senator-judges of his statements in his defense. Most of these were seemingly innocuous, which, one can immediately deduce, that one way or the other, the dies were loaded against Corona.

So that, on the basis of the latest mile of the trial, the Chief Justice may find himself in real trouble, if ever he fails to get the majority vote against him, it will be a very narrow edge.

Well, anyway, we cannot state definitely about our findings. After all, we are not lawyers but just ordinary Filipinos.

Well, like most Pinoys, I also rooted for Jessica Sanchez to win the American Idol title. But, as with most Filipinos, I also was disappointed.

But that does not mean that Jessica should have won it simply because that was my wish or of the Filipinos.

But she remains to most of us the favorite American Idol. In short, the Fil-Mexican singer remains in the hearts of Pinoy fans as the winner in American Idol.

Well, when the loot amounts to millions of pesos, rivalry seems to get into the picture.

And that is something which DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo should thoroughly probe. The row between the Quezon City Police Department’s and the CIDG operatives. It seems that the CIDG men were seemingly disarmed after they had arrested a certain Marylyn one of the two women, kidnapped by armed men and who demanded P20-million for her release.

Both sides had their own versions of the incident. But the most obvious is that the quarrel is jurisdiction over the case and the money involved.

In short, were it not for the huge amount involved, both the CIDG and the QCPD could not have been engaged in a near shootout. That means something is really wrong with the mindset of the elite police forces of the country.

And Robredo should do something fast and rid the agency of money-hungry cops to restore the public’s confidence in our men and women in uniform.

Definitely something must be wrong with the mind of the 24-year-old mother who had confessed to having strangled her two minor children in a sugarcane field Monday in Hinigaran town.

Mira Lacson, 24, is now detained at the Hinigaran police station pending the filing of charges against her for double parricide.

Based on the autopsy report by Dr. Edgar Acosta of the Hinigaran municipal health office, both children died of suffocation indicating that they have been strangled to death, news reports said.

The more important thing is for the police to have this mother undergo psychological, psychiatric tests by competent practitioners.

It is certainly not a common instinct for a mother in her right senses to murder her own children simply because she had been berated repeatedly by her parents over her conduct.

Offhand, Binalbagan Mayor Bebot Mirasol may have the upper hand in the election contest with Provincial Board member Dino Yulo.

But for observers, Dino has been provincial board member and former Vice Governor. And, although not supported by the majority of the town mayors, still he had been going around the district for a long time and has touched base with a lot of the voters of the district.

Bebot may have the print media and broadcasters proclaiming his desirability, but in the long run, it is the personal assessment of his approachability that counts among the voting population.

Here, Yulo gives him a run for his money.

Thus, Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. is correct. It will be a close fight. And the balance extra voting can tilt one way or the other despite early predictions that Mirasol has the edge over Yulo.*
