Mayor, four vice mayors
sure winners in May polls
BY ALEX PAL

Only one vote is needed to win.

The tandem of Mabinay Mayor Ernesto Uy and his vice mayoralty candidate, Enosario Baldoza, of the Nationalist People's Coalition is the only political team to run unchallenged in the May 2013 elections in Negros Oriental.

Mabinay is a third class town with 34,124 voters in 32 barangays.

Three other vice mayoralty candidates who are sure winners are Jose Cardenas (LP) for Canlaon City, Alexander Tuballa (LP) of Bacong, and Marianne Gustilo (NP) of Vallehermoso.

Meanwhile, some towns and cities in the province have mayors and vice mayors from the same family.

In Canlaon City, former mayor Judith Cardenas (UNA) is running for mayor, with her son, Jose Jr. (LP), as the vice mayoralty bet.

In Guihulngan City, Mayor Ernesto Reyes is running for vice mayor while his son, Guido, is gunning for the mayoral post, under the Liberal Party.

Jimalalud Mayor Reynaldo Tuanda is running for vice mayor, with his daughter Hazel Billono, as mayoralty bet under the LP.

Amlan Mayor Bentham dela Cruz is running for reelection with his brother, Gino, as his running mate under the NPC banner.

A total of 698,337 voters have so far registered in Negros Oriental as of August 2012. In the May 10, 2010 elections, the voters numbered 714,761, Commission on Election records show.

Provincial Elections Supervisor Eddie Aba said there was a decrease in the number of voters because the Comelec deleted the names of voters who failed to vote in the last two elections. He reminded new voters that they only have until October 31 to register.*AP
