Student-athletes from the University of St. La Salle continued their dominance in the college competition of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Education Association with twin victories in men and women’s volleyball yesterday.

The USLS men’s team beat Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Eagles in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-11, 25-16 to successfully defend their title, while the Lady Stingers replicated the feat in their championship match against University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, 25-11, 25-10, 26-24.

“Team unity and good communication among the members led us to this victory,” said La Salle men’s team captain Roelene Inaudito.

Donaire retains title
with TKO in ninth

Filipino champion Nonito Donaire defended his world super bantamweight titles by stopping Toshiaki Nishioka in the ninth round, handing the Japanese boxer his first defeat in eight years.

The 29-year-old Donaire knocked Nishioka down for the second time in the fight at 1:54 of the ninth round. Nishioka got up but his corner stepped in to stop the fight.

With the stoppage Donaire (30-1, 19 KOs) retained his WBO and IBF super bantamweight titles and extended his own win streak to 29 contests.

Terra Dolce/Jollibee cagers prevail
in SJI Alumni championship match

After four years, team members of the Terra Dolce/Jollibee 1990/91/92 finally got their hands on the championship trophy with a convincing 71-60 win against Shakeys/New Energy 2008/10/11 during the final game of the 5th St. John’s Institute Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup at the Msgr. John Liu Activities Center, Thursday night.

Most Valuable Player Peewee Demonteverde set the tone for Terra Dolce’s victory as he exploded with 20 points in the opening minutes for a commanding 32-5 first quarter lead.

Dominic Ciocon, Richard Co and Glin Ortaliz completed Terra Dolce’s dominating run with a near perfect defense as they prevented Shakey’s from scoring in the shaded area.
