Giant puppet of
Dolphy wins 1st prize

The giant puppet ”Empidol Tribute to Dolphy” won first prize yesterday among 73 of its kind that are entertaining the crowds in this year's MassKara Festival in Bacolod City.

The giant MassKara puppets, each standing between 12- to 14-feet tall with unique designs and personality, were created by all 808 students of the La Consolacion College (LCC)—School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Interior Design (ARFIEN).

The LCC ARFIEN students paraded their giant puppets from the Capitol Lagoon to the Bacolod public plaza where the judging took place, MassKara organizers said.

The LCC ARFIEN also awarded Rapunzel from the Movie “Tangled”— second prize and MassKara Rango — third prize.

More than 20 giant puppets will join the first night of the Electric MassKara at the Tourism Strip along Lacson Street Friday, with two Majica MassKara floats and the floats of schools and companies participating in the “Pagkilitaay, Pakitaay (Let's Meet and Show Off): Bacolod's Treasures Parade.”

On Sunday, the giant MassKara puppets will perform as a non-competing entry in the streetdance competition barangay category at the Bacolod public plaza. Before the arena performance at the plaza, they will parade from Sacred Heart Seminary (Lupit Church) going to the plaza.

On the third night of the Electric MassKara, the full cast of 73 giant MassKara puppets will join again the parade at the Tourism Strip starting 6 p.m. Sunday.

The giant MassKara puppets have corresponding miniature replicas, which are on exhibit at the LCC campus at the Rizal main gate until Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. to 8 p. m. with free admission.

Festival director Eli Tajanlangit said the participation of LCC

ARFIEN, through the giant MassKara puppets, has “expanded the visual dimension of the festival.”

Meanwhile, the costumes and masks that will be used in the streetdance competitions on Saturday and Sunday will be shown to the public through a fashion show at the Bacolod public plaza at 6 p.m. today.

Now on its second year, the MassKara Preview, in partnership with GMA TV, allows the public to see the streetdance costumes and masks before the competition proper, Rudy Reveche, streetdance committee chairman, said.

GMA Kapuso stars Mikael Daez and Bianca King will attend the MassKara Preview, Dado tan, GMA assistant program manager for Regional TV, said.

It is also where the judges choose the Best in Mask and Best in Costume, he said.

Reveche said the masks and the costumes will still be on exhibit at Robinsons Place starting this week.*
