scholarships to Japan

Three Filipinos received scholarship grants from the Panasonic Scholarship Co. Ltd. of Japan, and the 2013 awarding rites were held recently, a press release from the company said.

Aliya Mari Adefuin from Laguna, Fatima Joy Cruz from Cavite, and John Jewish Dominguez from Pangasinan were chosen after they passed a series of tests, interviews, and assessment of their overall performance as students or professionals. They will have the chance to do research and complete master's degrees in top universities in Japan, the press release also said.

Adefuin graduated cum laude from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, with a bachelor's degree in Biology, and will focus her study on biomedical research, stem cell biology, and neurobiology. Cruz, who has a Biochemistry bachelor's degree from UP Manila, will enroll in a master's program on applied chemistry and biochemistry; while Dominguez, a magna cum laude graduate from UP Diliman with a degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, intends to further his study on Applied Molecular Microbiology in Japan, the press release said.

The scholarship certificates were presented by Commission on Higher Education executive director IV, Julito Vitriolo; Japan Information and Cultural Center of the Embassy of Japan director Kiyoshi Takeuchi, Panasonic Scholarship Co. Ltd. of Japan president Kazuhiro Kawano, and Panasonic Scholarship (Philippines) chairman Naoya Nishiwaki.

The company started the scholarship program in 1998 to commemorate its 80th founding anniversary. The program came to the Philippines in 2000, and has benefited more than 30 Filipino students and professionals, the press release added.* back to top

Elderly Week
exhibit held

An exhibit featuring antiques, memorabilia and old family mementos was held in celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week, by the Zonta Club of Bacolod, in cooperation with SM Bacolod, at the mall, a press release from organizers said.

On display were antique furniture, religious statues that were authentic Spanish colonial pieces, and an antique telephone that is now considered a collector's item, courtesy of the Dizon-Ramos Museum, Sarlee Arts and Antiques and the personal collections of the Club. A photo exhibit, “Senior Moments”, by the Brush Strokes art and photography group complemented the old world charm of the collection, the press release also said.

Zonta president Merly Lizares welcomed guests, club members and mall-goers to the exhibit, at the exhibit opening were club vice president Marilyn Marañon, and officers and members Isabel Urra, Ofelia Servando, Tess Nazarea, Carmencita Maalat, Josefa Puentevella, Amalia Enriquez, Laniebelle Javelosa, Mila Moya, Amalia Unson, Lina Lim, Heny Escay, Tess Conui, and Baby Lizares, the press release also said.

The Elderly Filipino Week is held on the first seven days of every October, under Presidential Proclamation 470, signed by former president Fidel Ramos on September 26, 1994, the press release added.*

NSO to hold statistics quiz
prov'l elimination Oct. 25

In line with the National Statistics Month celebration, the National Statistics Office in Negros Occidental will conduct the 21st Philippine Statistics Quiz provincial elimination October 25 at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod City.

Participating schools should have three contestants, who are first-time college freshmen students, and are required to present certified machine-copy of enrollment form for the first semester or the equivalent first and second term for trimester of the current school year, a government press release said.

The top three winners in the provincial elimination will represent Negros Occidental in the regional elimination in Iloilo City on November 20, and regional winners will represent Western Visayas in the national championship on December 4 in Metro Manila.

The quiz is an annual competition to access the competency and skills of students in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum. It hopes to promote, enhance and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of science and statistics among students, and to generate public awareness on the uses of statistics in all development-planning activities, the press release also said.

The NS Month celebration opening ceremony was held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center gym recently, on the theme “Monitoring Progress on Decent Work Through Statistics: Pathway to Inclusive Growth”.

The closing and awarding program will be held October 29, also at NOMPAC. The commemoration is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 647, issued by the late President Corazon Aquino on September 20, 1990, the press release added.*
