New MassKara sing, dance
contests for brgys launched

MassKara Festival organizers have launched an inter-barangay new contest, calledd “Tandậ! Sing Na, Dance Pa!” to make this year’s celebration more accessible and to showcase the talents from the 61 barangays of Bacolod City.

The competition is open to all Bacoleños of all ages and will have vocal solo and solo dance categories. It will be held every night starting October 2 at the Bacolod public plaza, and is in partnership with the Liga ng mga Barangay, a press release from organizers said.

Streetdance committee chairman Rudy Reveche said that from October 2-19, five contestants will compete in the vocal, and another five for solo dance. Three songs—one mellow, one upbeat, and one of his/her own choice—should be rendered by each contestant at the San Juan, Gonzaga, and Gatuslao streets contest venues at 7 p.m.; while each dancer will perform one lyrical, one upbeat and one dance of his/her own choice, also in said venues, he added in the press release.

The nightly winners for each category will compete in the weekly semifinals on Oct. 7, 13, and 19, and the grand finals will be on Oct. 22.

Festival director Eli Tajanlangit said the MassKara activities have slowly been dominated by professional and semi-professional artists and dancers, and the ordinary barangay folks seem hesitant to participate in the celebration.

Applications are accepted at the Liga Office at San Juan Street, and at her Sangguniang Panlungsod Office at the Bacolod Government Center, the press release also said.

Those interested may call the organizers at 433-9011 local 211.

Meanwhile, the orientation for the MassKara kiosk operators will be held 10 a.m. tomorrow, at the BAYS Center, festival site manager Ma. Carmen Arrieta-Vasquez said in a press release.

Representatives from the City Health Office, Bureau of Fire, Office of the Building Official, Bacolod City Police Office, and the Department of Public Services will discuss electrical installation, sound system, cleanliness and sanitation, area of business operations, guidelines and rules on kiosk operations, that will be from October 1 to 22.

Festival sponsors will also be present at the orientation. Applications for kiosk operations are still being accepted by the MassKara Office, the press release added.*
