CHR to probe ‘mauling’
of nabbed guns-for-hire

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Special investigator Jess Cañete of the Commission on Human Rights in Negros Oriental assured  yesterday he will conduct an independent investigation on the arrest of two suspected guns-for-hire who sustained physical injuries  after their arrest.

Cañete said  he will focus his probe on  only two areas: These are, whether the arrest was carried out in a legitimate manner and who are responsible for the injuries inflicted on the suspects.

Questions had arisen  over the bruises and other injuries sustained by suspects Anthony Eleuterio and Herman Escoro, both from Bayawan City, Negros Oriental, who were arrested by police and security escorts of Gov. Roel Degamo in  Nov. 10 in Bonawon, Siaton town.

SOLON ASKS OMBUDSMAN
Deny extension on
NBN-ZTE case

Rep. Teddy Casiño of Bayan Muna with Bayan chairperson Carol Araullo and Makabayan vice president Liza Maza will file with the Office of the Ombudsman today their opposition to the "motion for extension of time to file counter-affidavit" of former president, now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, on the NBN-ZTE plunder complaint.

Arroyo has been given until today, to file her counter-affidavit after being given a 30-day extension, a press release from Casiño’s office said.

Casiño, Araullo and Maza will likewise file an urgent motion asking the Ombudsman to resolve the case in order for the plunder charge to be filed immediately with the Sandiganbayan.

Visayan history: dean

Dr. Earl Jude Paul Cleope,  College of Education Dean  and professor of history at Silliman University, highlighted the presence of a large volume of historical data on Visayas but the absence of a synthesis that binds them into common material, a press release from SU in Dumaguete City said.

Cleope,  co-president of the Philippine National Historical Society,  said that after he presented a paper on “The State of Historiography in the Visayas” at the 32nd PNHS National Conference on National and Local History held  in Pampanga recently.

He said “there is voluminous historical writing about the Visayas but there is no synthesis that can explain from a common perspective how the  Visayas – its people, distinct culture and practices – came about”.
