Strictly enforce law,
election officers told
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Provincial election officer Manuel Advincula has ordered election officers from 25 local government units in Oriental Negros to strictly enforce provisions of the Fair Elections Act, especially in the placement of posters by candidates.

A memorandum was issued by the Commission on Elections creating a task force to be headed by the election officers, with the Philippine National Police, and General Services Office employees as members. Election propaganda materials are allowed only in designated areas, not in school premises, bridges, electric posts, among others, Advincula reiterated.

In Dumaguete City, 31 poster areas have been identified, city election officer Eddie Aba said.

Officials 'compare notes'
on senatorial candidates

Oriental Negros officials said they have yet to compare notes as to who among the senatorial bets they will support in the May 14 elections.

They said, though, that they all share one common criteria -- the candidate has sentiments, has helped and would be a help to local government units. Rep. Emilio Macias II (2nd district, NegOr), who is ending his last term, and is running for governor under the Nacionalista Party, said he does not have a final line-up yet.

He said he would like to share notes with his partymate, Gov. George Arnaiz.

Unity forged versus Tuting

Two political leaders in Dumaguete City may unite against incumbent Mayor Agustin Perdices.

Provincial Board Member Arturo Umbac (2nd district, Oriental Negros), who already made public his intention to run for mayor, confirmed that he and former Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo are now talking of a possible alliance against Perdices. Umbac did not elaborate but stressed that whatever is the outcome of the talk, he will not change his decision.

"There is no turning back," Umbac told the DAILY STAR.
