Negros Occidental tankers Miguel Villanueva, Kiefer Piccio and Dominique Balinas registered multiple-gold finishes as the hosts looked headed for another romp, after winning 19 of the 28 golds contested in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet swimming competitions in Bacolod City yesterday.

The titles in the secondary boys and girls' divisions as well as in the elementary boys' category appeared to be in the bag for the Negros delegation.

The losses, however, piled up in the elementary girls' division, where the Negrenses suffered a gold-medal shutout. Iloilo leads the contest with six golds, while Antique pulled off a surprise by winning a gold, courtesy of Rikka Duarte in the 200-m free.

strike again

Standout throwers Maika De Oro, Darnelle Camposilao and Josie Entrina of Negros Occidental claimed their second gold medals yesterday as the hosts zoomed into the lead in three of the four divisions in the track and field competition of the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet in Bacolod City.

A 1-2 finish in discus throw pushed Negros into the lead in the secondary girls' division with 52 points, followed by Iloilo with 50 and Guimaras with 12 at the Panaad Park and Stadium.

The Negrenses also tightened their grip of the secondary boys' division with 39 points, following the victory of Talisay's Arjay Arinal in the 110-m hurdles and the silver finish of Renjo Clavel in the 800-m.

Netters, shuttlers triumph

Negros Occidental dominated secondary lawn tennis, while the elementary girls' badminton team triumphed at the expense of Iloilo in the ongoing regional Palaro in Bacolod City.

Led by internationalist Martina Guba of La Carlota City, the high school lawn tennis squad took all but one of the six titles contested. Guba topped the girls' singles event after beating Rizza Mariano of Iloilo at the USLS courts.

At the Pohang Badminton Court, Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Nikki Therese Servando downed Iloilo bets Lou Kathleen Gayo and Shayne Camille Dumat-ol in succession to claim the girls' singles gold. Negros also won the team competition by beating Capiz in the finals.
