Rep. Jacinto Paras said that if his older brother, Jerome, also
a former congressman for three terms, is the official candidate
of their family, this will not carry any weight but will only be
persuasive as far as politics is concerned
The younger Paras was responding to criticisms from another
elder brother, Jerry, that he is "greedy" for not complying with
their signed agreement in August 2003, a year before the 2004 elections.
Jerry said that, to settle the conflict between them, an agreement
was signed by members of the family before the death of their mother,
that in 2004, Jacinto will be the family's candidate, and in 2007,
Jerome will take his turn. Jacinto, the incumbent solon, however,
said it is the people represented by the mayors, who want his wife,
Olive, to run for Congress in the first district.
TEVES VS. TEVES.
Meanwhile, former Valencia mayor and former vice governor
Edgar Teves filed his certificate of candidacy for congressman of
the third district, Wednesday, to dispel rumors that he was withdrawing
because of monetary considerations.
Teves will be running under the United Opposition banner against
his nephew Henry Pryde Teves, grandson of Rep. Herminio Teves (3rd
District, NegOr).
This is Edgar's second attempt, the first was against Herminio
in 2004.
He said he believes he has an even chance of winning this year,
provided the opposing camp fights him squarely.
Edgar said he will concentrate on health programs, and generate
more employment opportunities in the 3rd district. His biggest long
term vision is to transfer the airport from Dumaguete to Bondo in
Siaton, approximately 40 kilometers away from the city.*JG
