Pag-Ibig Fund sues 15 firms
for unremitted contributions

CEBU CITY – The Home Development Mutual Fund, more popularly known as the Pag-Ibig Fund, has filed criminal cases against 15 employers who refused to remit some P20 million in workers’ contributions.

Pag-Ibig said that the employers owed the agency about P20 million in premiums, which their workers need to avail themselves of housing and other types of loans.

Lawyer Lovella Albina, HDMF legal counsel, pointed out that Pag-Ibig coverage is mandatory under Republic Act 9679. He said the filing of charges should be a wake-up call for delinquent employers.

Measures vs pork
smuggling urged

A resolution urging City Agriculture and City Veterinary heads, Goldwyn Nifras and Rex Juplo, respectively, through the Office of the City Mayor, to act on pork smuggling in the city, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod yesterday.

The resolution authored by Councilor El Cid Familiaran, said reports stated that pig growers nationwide will hold a pork holiday next week to register their dismay over the unabated entry of imported pork.

It said the proponents claim that they have been losing millions and millions of pesos, because they cannot compete with the imported port, of which big volumes are smuggled into the country.

Labor department insists
wage hike not feasible

Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz has reiterated its stand that the proposed across-the-board P125 daily wage increase is not feasible, a DOLE press release said.

While the DOLE shares the view that there should be high and rising living standards for workers and their families, it cannot support the proposed across-the-board P125 daily wage increase as it will weigh down heavily on the economy through higher prices, loss of jobs, and slower overall economic growth, Baldoz claimed.

Baldoz was referring to the DOLE position paper presented in connection with House Bill No. 375, or "An Act Providing for a P125 Daily Across the Board Increase in the Salary Rates of Employees and Workers in the Private Sector and for Other Purposes".
