Nurse in critical condition in
Brgy. 35 shooting incident

A nursing graduate was shot by unidentified suspects at about 11:30 p.m. Monday, in Brgy. 35, Bacolod City and is now in critical condition.

Supt. Santiago Rapiz, head of the Special Operations Task Group of the Bacolod Police, identified the victim as Eduardo Jereza, 32, of Regent Pearl Homes in Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod, and also of Purok Maabi-abihon, Brgy. 35.

Jereza sustained a through-and-through gunshot wound in the head and was rushed to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center, where he is confined.

Initial investigation showed the victim was having drinks with two companions, whose names were not disclosed, near the basketball court of the barangay when the suspects arrived and asked where they can trade their chickens for illegal drugs.

Jereza reportedly replied in a manner that offended one of the suspects, who drew his .38 caliber revolver and shot him, Rapiz said. The suspects left, bringing the gun used in shooting Jereza, he added.

Witnesses said one of the suspects was clad in a black T-shirt and cargo pants, of medium build and about 5 feet and 6 inches tall, while the other one was wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts, and was about 5 feet and 4 inches in height.

Rapiz said they already have leads on the identities and whereabouts of the suspects.*APN

Driver nabbed for robbery

A jeepney driver was apprehended by Station 4 policemen in a follow-up operation in Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod City, at about 5:30 a.m. yesterday, after he allegedly held up an office secretary in the barangay, Monday night.

Station 4 chief, Supt. Leonardo Borromeo, identified the suspect as Junrey Nuyad, 31, of Purok Kabakawan in Brgy. Villamonte.

Claudia Dorias of Purok 13, Brgy. Mandalagan, said she was walking in Brgy. Villamonte on her way home, at about 9:45 p.m. Monday, when the suspect blocked her way, threatened her with a knife, declared a hold-up and forcibly took her bag.

She said she fought back but she fell to the pavement, while the suspect fled with her bag, that contained her two cellular phones valued at P8,500, wallet with P300 in cash and identification cards.

Dorias sought the help of Station 4 policemen, who launched a hot pursuit operation and arrested Nuyad. Dorias’s bag was later recovered in a canal in Purok Bayanihan by a trisikad driver and was turned over to the police.

The victim’s cellular phones were there but her money was gone, police records showed.

Nuyad admitted robbing Dorias but claimed that he was forced to do it because he needed money to buy medicines for his ailment.

When confronted by Dorias at the office of Bacolod City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz yesterday, Nuyad knelt before the complainant and apologized.

Dorias, however, is determined to pursue the filing of charges against Nuyad so he can no longer victimize other people.

Meanwhile, De la Paz said that the police visibility, through checkpoint operations, “Oplan Katawhayan sa Dalan” and “Operation Sita” in Bacolod, has been intensified because of the ongoing Panaad sa Negros Festival.

He also ordered a rigid intelligence monitoring of the arrivals of criminals from other provinces, who may have plans to victimize revelers at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan.

About 90 police field training personnel were deployed to the festival site, and traffic plans are now in place to ensure that vehicles will not be stalled in the area.

Revelers are also advised to be vigilant, and to avoid bringing valuable items and huge amounts of cash so as not to lure thieves.*APN
